“60 YEARS OF NO DRIPS” ANIMATION
KIKKOMAN 60TH ANNIVERSARY DESIGN CONTEST -
TOP 6 FINALIST
BRIEF:
”The Kikkoman Soy Sauce dispenser is more than a familiar household object. It’s a design icon whose bell-like shape and characteristic red cap are so distinctive, it’s instantly recognizable all over the world. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of this icon, we’re asking fans to submit a creative design inspired by the dispenser. We encourage unique creative art - from photos, illustrations, food art, or short animations - that celebrates the Kikkoman bottle. Be sure to keep in mind the bottle’s iconic shape and design features when creating your submission.”
CONCEPT:
My submission celebrates 60 years of Kikkoman’s practical, no-drip design through engaging animation and featuring elements from Japanese culture. Highlighting the elegant silhouette, turning the iconic red cap into swinging lanterns, slurping up drops with a smiling spout, and serving up soy sauce fireworks - there’s much to celebrate about this global icon.
RESULT:
This was done in a bit of a rush as I only learned about the contest a week before the deadline. If I had more time, I’d have added more texture and some faint background elements, as well as smoothed out some opacity issues during the transition. I would’ve liked to add sound or music, but the file couldn’t be too big per the deliverable limit.
I think the overall animation and spirit of the piece is solid, though, and must have resonated with judges since it was selected as 1 of 6 finalists out of thousands of entries. I unfortunately didn’t place top 3, but I’m extremely honored to have had my work recognized by the company at such an early stage in my animation career.
